Biography
Ben Holland is an Oxford-based artist, originating from Birmingham. Born within a chaotic medley of artists, his teenage years and early adulthood was characterised by a rebellious resentment of all creative endeavours. He frequently found himself sniffing out new career paths, from joining the Royal Navy to becoming a Cornish fisherman, or from being a nuclear convoy driver to building his own ice cream empire. The connection found in this scrambling together of these hypothetical travel pursuits and life ambitions is a speculative volley of his conscious, which aligns with his artwork today.
Ben's work revolves around the tactility of materials and the fictional embers derived from patterns and structural forms. Working to recreate the visual abrasions on the landscape formed by industrial footprints and extraction processes, his sculptures centre on abstract geometry, exploring the tensions between environment and human consumption. Driven by research into archival and satellite imagery as well as fabricating fictitious narratives, Ben's work is rooted in an innate desire for a material and spatial accessibility to industrial locations.
In recent works, Ben has explored industrial solar evaporation ponds which contain vast amounts of seawater or lake water brine. As the sun heats the salty water contained within the rectangular pools, a concentration of salt is revealed, and over the process of years, a hard salty crust forms. To break up this hardened crust, workers and machines rake the salt to soften and spread the content. From satellite imagery, this creates hundreds of thousands of lines operating in different directions and patterns. Ben sees these formations as accidental prints left behind from the workers/ industrial machines. They are literal scratches and scrapings on the beds of these ponds making up highly complex artworks, seen only from satellite imagery.
